The Department offers a four year UG degree course, Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and a two-year PG degree course, M. Tech in CAD / CAM. The course of B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering was started in 1998-99 with an intake of 60. Subsequently the intake increased to 120 in the year 2007-08. The M. Tech. in Industrial Engineering & Management (IEM) was started in the year 2004-05 with an intake of 18.  Keeping the industry needs in view, IEM was replaced by CAD/ CAM in 2009. So far, 18 batches of UG and 11 batches of PG have successfully completed their course. We proudly announce that many students of our department have established and emerged as successful entrepreneurs. The department is well established with excellent laboratory facilities. Further, we have well qualified competent faculty with a blend of industry and academic experience supported by senior technical staff. The Board of Studies of the Mechanical engineering department considers inputs from members from Industry and academia to design curriculum to equip the students industry ready. The Department mainly concentrates to impart high Quality Technical & Professional education with rich research culture to cater present day needs.

The department has ICT rooms for analyzing, solving of the numerical problems of various subjects.  Facilities are also available for the presentations, Group Discussions and various association activities.

1. SAEINDIA JBIET Collegiate Club

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is an affiliate society of SAE International, registered as an India nonprofit engineering and scientific society dedicated to the advancement of mobility community in India. SAEINDIA The BAJA SAEINDIA is a student competition that presents the undergraduate engineering students with a stimulating task of designing, fabricating and validating an All Terrain Vehicle.

 The Baja SAE Series challenges students to produce a prototype off-road vehicle capable of withstanding several different rough terrain conditions. In addition to physically testing the vehicle in competition, each team must present their prototype to a fictitious company. The teams must be able to defend any design decisions and expenses to the company.

Objectives

Any SAE student member team studying in undergraduate engineering college in India, with age above 18 years can participate.

Each team’s goal will be to design and build a prototype of a rugged, single seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the non-professional and off-road enthusiast.

The students are assigned the task of designing, building, testing, promoting and racing an off road vehicle, that will withstand the rigors of a rough terrain.

The underlying purpose of the event is to provide SAE student members with challenges that reflect the steps involved in the entire process from design and engineering to production and marketing.

 Functions

The work done and experience gained by a student SAE member is well appreciated by the automotive industry and helps the student during placements.

The students will have industry like working experience which helps them to improve their technical skills and apply their technical knowledge.

It will be helpful for the students who wish to pursue MS or do research by providing those necessary skills and scope for research work.

The student gets opportunity to attend placements for to automotive industries such as MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA, ARAI, ELEATION, ANSYS, JOHN DEERE, etc. About JBIET SAE BAJA Teams:

During the year 2009, under esteemed guidance of Prof. Y. Vijaya Kumar and Mr. B. V. K. Murthy as Faculty Advisors, SAEINDIA JBIET COLLEGIATE CLUB was established with an intake of 170 students as members of this club.

The club takes privilege in conducting many events like Tier-1 events of Student Convention, organizing many workshops, and taking part in competitions held nation-wide like Pro-Kart, Student Convention and BAJA where students are given opportunities to compete with participants from various colleges.

In BAJA 2011, JBIET was awarded 2nd prize of worth Rs.40000/- in Presentation Division.

Also, SAE INDIA JBIET COLLEGIATE CLUB was awarded “Best Collegiate Club-2011” from Southern Section. Students also participated in EFFICYCLE event.

After few years again in 2015, the SAE collegiate club of JBIET under the name “Team Vulcans” cleared the virtual round and successfully fabricated the All Terrain Vehicle. The team represented JBIET at NATRAX facility of NATRIP, Pithampur, Indore from 16th – 23 rd Feb’2016.

Again, after a brief hiatus, Team ‘The Mechanical AutoDidacts’ cleared the virtual round of BAJA 2K19 and competed in the Dynamic round held at IIT-Ropar, Punjab from 6th – 11 March 2019.

Rise of The Mechanical AutoDidacts ( JBIET College team 2019):

The Mechanical Autodidacts was formed in the year 2018. We started our journey with members as few as twenty five, but now, we're slowly growing in numbers. 'A self-taught person' is what the word 'autodidact' means and this word aptly tells our team's story. We are making our presence felt at various colleges across the nation with our Go-kart and ATV racing teams.

This year, in the virtual round of SAEINDIA BAJA 2K19, conducted at Chitkara University, Punjab, we have secured 5th position from Telangana and 109 out of 388 all-over India.

The mechanical Autodidacts BAJA Team (virtual round of BAJA of SAEINDIA) at Chitkara University , Punjab from 12/7/18 to 18/7/18 has been attended by students.

2 Days National Conference on Skill India Initiative and Entrepreneurship for a Successful India on 30-09-2015 and 01-10-2015 conducted in EDP Cell ;  Dr. G.U. K.RAO,SHRI G. SAMPATH KUMAR and VENKAT VEDIRE acted as Resource persons.

Intensive Technical Skills Development Program-1 conducted on 19-10-2015 to 21-10-2015 for Lab Technicians.

A Refresher Course on 'Automobile Engineering' on 10th Feb, 2015 is held by Department of Mechanical Engineering in MN Rao Auditorium: Mr.K.Aravind Manager Technical Traning Bosch Chennai acted as Resource person.

TIER-II Event are inaugurated and conducted by SAE JBIET Collegiate Club. Mr.Padmanabhan Sci”G’, DMRL, SAE International Hyderabad has addressed members of SAE Chapter students on 15 Sep 2014 at EDP Cell. Aeromodelling, Technical Quiz, Engine assembly events were held.

A One week Workshop on Automobile  Dynamics & Designing is held by Elite  Technogroup in MN Rao Auditorium during  15-21 July 2014.

National Workshop on "Entrepreneurship: the Challenges & Opportunities" is held during 7-8th March, 2014 orgnanized by Mechanical Department in Entrepreneurship Develeopment Cell.

A Seminar on “Nondestructive Testing” is conducted on 4 March 2014 by Department of Mechanical Engineering in association with ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING SERVICES, Hyderabad.

A 3-Day Entrepreneurship Development program in association with Osmania University during 9-11 Jan, 2011 in JBIET Campus.

Department is enhancing its research activities at rapid pace. Department has produced FIVE doctorates during last three years and another SIX faculty members are pursuing their Ph.D. Faculty are actively involved in promoting and inculcating research culture in the department. Nearly 80 students were made part of the research during last 3 years.  Faculty have published above 100 research papers in reputed journals during last five years.

1. Short human hair is a renewable waste by-product which is abundantly available across the globe. Exploring its recycling opportunities not only solves environmental issues but also create job opportunities.   Mr. P.Divakara Rao, Associate professor of the department is doing research on utilization of this waste human hair as reinforcement in composites and studied its suitability in composite industry. He has submitted Ph.D. on this topic at JNTUH.  
2. Dr. ACS Kumar has submitted his Ph.D thesis on “STUDY ON THE REDRESS LIFE OF THE GRINDING WHEEL AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE WET SURFACE GRINDING PROCESS” at IIT, Delhi.
3. Dr.R.S.Uma Maheshwar Rao  has submitted his Ph.D thesis on “PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CHITIN REINFORCED PHENOL FORMALDEHYDE NANOCOMPOSITES” at JNTUH in view of improving the properties of the composites materials researchers have been working on noble materials to utilize the advantage of those composite properties  for the social advantage and its development.
4. Dr.Md.Israr Equbal has submitted his Ph.D thesis on “STUDIES ON PARAMETRIC OPTIMIZATION OF ALLOY STEEL FORGING” to improve the performance of the steels with additional strength or hardness by using other alternative strengthening mechanisms
5. Mr. G. Gopinath is pursuing his Ph.D on “OPTIMIZATION OF PROCESS PARAMETRS IN ABRASIVE WATER JET MACHINING OF H11 TOOL STEEL  BY GREY RELATIONAL ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY” AWJM of AISI H11 hot work tool steel is considered for the study

STUDENTS-Grants/Achievements/Awards

• A project with title “Extraction of water from Atmospheric Air” has bagged 1st prize at project presentation competition at TECHNOFEST 2011 conducted by JNTUH during the academic year 2010-11.
• A team of students of our department have designed Effi-Cycle and their design is selected for the competition at SAE competitions which will be held at Chennai during Nov 2011.
• A group of students of the department have designed, fabricated a four wheeled all terrain vehicle and participated in the SAE BAJA competition at Pithampur. They have bagged  II prize with cash prize of Rs.50,000/- for their technical presentation.
• Mr. Bhasker Ranjith of IV B.Tech is selected for Scholarship award by SAE and is presented at the meet conducted by SAE at Chennai during 30 Sep-1 Oct, 2011.
• Elected for Best SAE Collegiate Club of INDIA, Southern Section and our students have received this award at Chennai during the meet conducted by SAE during 30 Sep-1 Oct, 2011.
